Russia summons Swedish diplomat over latest drone incident in Stockholm

Moscow urges Swedish authorities to 'identify perpetrators behind systematic attacks on Russian foreign missions'

ISTANBUL (AA) – Russia on Monday summoned the Swedish Chargé d’Affaires in Moscow to protest what it called “another attack” against its diplomatic presence in Sweden, following a drone incident targeting its trade mission in Stockholm on July 5, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

The diplomat, J. Soderberg, was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry where officials lodged a strong protest and demanded Sweden comply with its obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Moscow urged Swedish authorities to “identify the perpetrators behind the systematic attacks on Russian foreign missions” and ensure they are brought to justice.

The statement noted the July 5 incident involved a drone dropping a container of paint onto the mission’s territory.

Russia stressed that the continued targeting of its diplomatic missions raises serious questions about Stockholm’s ability—or willingness—to uphold diplomatic protections.

“These attacks have continued for over a year, and appeals to Swedish police and the Foreign Ministry have yielded no results,” the Russian side previously said, warning that Sweden bears full responsibility for the situation.

Russian diplomatic missions in Stockholm have faced a series of incidents, including vandalism, since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine in 2022.
