MOSCOW (AA) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday that Moscow will provide Iran with credit to advance the North-South transport project.

Speaking at a news conference in Tehran following a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Sayyid Abbas Araghchi, Lavrov said trade turnover between the two countries increased by more than 13% last year, with strong prospects for continued growth.

"We are pleased that our Iranian friends are taking the necessary steps before construction begins on the Rasht-Astara railway line. We expect the project to commence soon, supported by a Russian export loan. This railway is a crucial component for the full launch of the international North-South transport corridor," he added.

Lavrov emphasized that Russia and Iran advocate resolving conflicts based on the UN Charter and reject unilateral economic sanctions. He added that Moscow and Tehran are working together to minimize the impact of such sanctions.

He said Russia and Iran coordinate their positions on UN affairs and have agreed to strengthen cooperation within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Addressing the Iran nuclear deal — an agreement signed in 2015 to regulate Tehran’s nuclear program, later disrupted by the US withdrawal and the EU’s reluctance to fulfill its obligations — Lavrov said both diplomats had thoroughly discussed the matter and saw potential for its revival.

Turning to Syria, Lavrov said he and his Iranian counterpart reaffirmed their commitment to coordinating efforts aimed at fostering peace and stability in the country. He expressed hope that the All-Syrian National Congress would contribute to reconciliation among different factions.

He also pledged to support peace in Syria, ensuring the country does not pose threats to its own people or its neighbors.

"Attempts to influence internal Syrian processes without the participation of key nations like Russia, Iran, and China do not align with the goal of national unity. Instead, they risk deepening divisions, as has been evident since the so-called Arab Spring," he said.

Lavrov thanked Iran for its "balanced position," acknowledging its understanding of root causes and Russia’s concerns. He also shared details of Russia’s recent contacts with the US, including discussions on Syria.

Regarding Monday’s UN Security Council vote on an anti-Russian resolution — where a neutral, US-sponsored resolution was passed — Lavrov said it reflects "a growing recognition of the need to address the root causes of the crisis."
