Shooting kills police chief in southern Afghanistan

Incident takes place outside Kandahar governor’s office after local security officials’ meeting with US commander

KABUL, Afghanistan (AA) - The police chief in Afghanistan’s southern Kandahar province was killed in a shooting incident on Thursday, local media reported.

Gen. Abdul Raziq got killed due to gunfire allegedly shot by the guards of the provincial governor, local Tolo News said in a report.

The incident took place outside the provincial governor’s office in Kandahar city moments after U.S. Commander in Afghanistan Gen. Austin Scott Miller’s left the office via a helicopter, following his meeting with local security officials.

A number of other local officials also sustained injuries, the report said.

Meanwhile, Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a statement, , Qari Yosuf Ahmadi, the Taliban spokesman, said Gen. Miller and Gen. Raziq were their targets.
