SIIRT, Turkey (AA) – One soldier was martyred early Sunday during an anti-terror operation in southeastern Turkey.

Soldiers came into close contact with PKK terrorists in the Eruh district of Siirt province; during clashes one soldier was martyred.

Four others were wounded, hospital sources said. The injured were taken to Siirt State Hospital as air-supported operations to capture the PKK terrorists continued.

Southeastern Turkey has seen a number of terror attacks and counter-terrorism operations by security forces since the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU – resumed its 30-year armed campaign against the state in July 2015.

Since then, nearly 600 security personnel, including troops, police officers and village guards have been martyred and more than 5,000 PKK terrorists killed in operations across Turkey and northern Iraq.
