MOGADISHU, Somalia (AA) – A government official was killed in a shootout between his guards and police in the Somali capital on Thursday, officials confirmed.

Abdihakin Dhagajun was the district commissioner of Mogadishu's Hodan district, whereas the gun battle took place in Howlwadag.

Police said three soldiers were also wounded in the incident, but did not share further details.

Meanwhile, Farhan Ali Ahmed, the state minister for internal security, held the police responsible for the killing. According to sources, top police officials of Howlwadag have been held.

Dhagajun returned from Turkey on Wednesday after treatment for injuries he sustained in a bomb blast in the capital last November.

“I send my condolences to the family & friends of Hodan District Commissioner Abdihakin Dhagajun who passed away in an unfortunate incident,” said Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble on Twitter.

He ordered the relevant security agencies to conduct an immediate investigation to bring to justice those involved.
