LONDON (AA) - Some places across the UK have crossed the heatwave threshold, according to a map posted by the state weather service on Wednesday.

The Met Office tweeted that temperatures have significantly risen in the region, including the capital London as well as the cities of Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, and Sheffield.

Heatwaves in these areas are expected to last for three to seven days.

A heatwave is defined as an extended period of excessively hot weather that surpasses local climatic conditions and lasts for at least three consecutive days, often accompanied by high humidity and pressure.

Last Saturday, temperatures in the UK reached the highest values of the year at 32.2C (90F).

The highest temperature ever recorded in the UK was on July 19, 2022, with 40.3C (104.5).
