ISTANBUL (AA) - A South Korean activist group said Friday that latex balloons filled with leaflets requesting the return of seven abductees have been sent to North Korea.

Three large balloons carrying 1,000 leaflets about North Korean abductees were launched northward from South Korea's Gangwon Province late Thursday, according to the Seoul-based Yonhap News.

The Association of the Families of Those Abducted by North Korea has said that one of the balloons landed in North Korea's south Kumgang county.

The group's last mission took place April 27 from the border.

Families have continued to demand information on the whereabouts and return of seven abductees. including five South Koreans and a Japanese national named Megumi Yokota.

The group's leader said he will keep launching balloons until he learns the fate of his abducted father and others.

The campaign has faced criticism from locals and officials who fear it could trigger North Korean retaliation.
