ISTANBUL (AA) - A South Korean court Friday ordered the government pay compensation to Vietnamese Nguyen Thi Thanh who claimed that South Korean soldiers killed her family and injured her during the Vietnam war, reported Yonhap News Agency.

The 64-year-old woman had filed a case against the South Korean government in 2020 and a Seoul court had ruled in her favor in 2023 which an appeals court has upheld on Friday.

Nguyen was a survivor of the massacre that happened in 1968 in a village in Quang Nam province of Vietnam during which approximately 70 Vietnamese civilians were killed and Nguyen herself was injured by South Korean soldiers.

The court ordered the authorities to pay 30 million won ($20,580) and the corresponding delay damages to the victim.

The ruling marked the first time the South Korean judicial authorities acknowledged the state's liability to compensate victims of Korean troops' killings of Vietnamese civilians during the war.

South Korea had deployed approximately 320,000 troops to Vietnam during the war as part of its alliance with the US.
