ANKARA (AA) - A South Korean soldier "accidentally" fired a machine gun toward North Korea last week at the inter-Korean border, prompting Seoul's military to air broadcasts to notify Pyongyang of the mistake, local media reported on Sunday.
The incident took place on Wednesday when the soldier mistakenly fired a single round from the K6 heavy machine gun from a guard post inside the Demilitarized Zone, which splits the two Koreas in Cheorwon County, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) north of Seoul, the Yonhap news agency reported, citing military officials.
The South Korean military immediately notified North Korea of the incident by airing broadcasts to head off any misunderstanding.
Officials said they presume the round did not reach the North's side as it went through a reinforced door, likely slowing it down.
Soul said it has yet to detect any unusual signs of North Korean military activity in response to the accidental fire.
The two countries are divided by a 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) wide and 249-kilometer (155-mile) demilitarized zone, which serves as a focal point for tensions between the two neighbors
