ISTANBUL (AA) - A SpaceX rocket exploded during testing Wednesday night in Texas, erupting into a massive fireball that lit up the sky, according to local media reports.
The Starship prototype “experienced a major anomaly” around 11 p.m. while it was on the test stand ahead of its 10th flight test at Starbase, the company’s launch facility at the southern tip of Texas, SpaceX said.
“A safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation and all personnel are safe and accounted for,” the company stated on X.
SpaceX, led by CEO Elon Musk, said there was no threat to nearby communities and urged the public to stay away from the site. The company added that it is working with local authorities in response to the incident.
