MADRID (AA) - An extraordinary council of Spanish ministers passed measures on Saturday, which aim to force the dismissal of key leaders in the Catalan parliament and trigger regional elections within six months.
Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said he would trigger Article 155 of the Spanish constitution, which gives Madrid control of Catalonia "because no government in a democratic country can accept that the law is ignored".
The measures put forward by the cabinet will now be put to a vote in Spain's senate.
