Arrangements underway to receive delegation from Doha, military council asserts

KHARTOUM (AA) - Sudan’s ruling Military Transitional Council (MTC) has denied media reports claiming it had refused a proposed visit by a high-level Qatari delegation including Qatar’s foreign minister.

“The Sudanese Foreign Ministry rejects reports by certain Arab television stations that Sudan has refused a visit by Qatar’s foreign minister,” the ministry said in a Thursday statement.

It went on to assert that arrangements were now underway to receive a delegation from Qatar “within coming days”.

On Wednesday night, MTC spokesman Shams al-Din Kabashi said that council members had already received delegations from Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Italy and France.

Last week, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was ousted by the military following months of popular demonstrations against his 30-year rule.

The MTC now plans to run the nation’s affairs for a two-year transitional period during which presidential elections will be held.
