Sudanese opposition bloc denies reports of disunity

Opposition forces maintain demand for swift transfer of power to civilian authority

KHARTOUM (AA) - The Sudan Appeal, a coalition of opposition parties, has denied reports in the local media that its membership in the Freedom and Change Alliance, an umbrella of Sudanese opposition forces, was suspended.

“These reports are incorrect,” Sudan Appeal leader Omar al-Daqir said in a Thursday statement.

The Sudan Appeal, he insisted, was “still working with its [alliance] partners to realize the demands of the December revolution” that led to last month’s ouster of President Omar al-Bashir after three decades in power.

“Unity is key to the revolution’s success,” al-Daqir said.

Sudan has remained in political turmoil since the army announced al-Bashir’s ouster on April 11 following months of popular protest against his continued rule.

A Military Transitional Council (MTC) is now overseeing a two-year post-Bashir “transitional period” during which it has pledged to hold free presidential elections.

Thousands of demonstrators, however, have remained in the streets of capital Khartoum to demand that the MTC hand over power -- at the earliest possible date -- to a civilian authority.
