Sudanese protesters surround security HQ in Khartoum

Defense minister confirms ‘removal’ of President Omar al-Bashir, imposition of two-year ‘transitional phase’

KHARTOUM (AA) - Sudanese demonstrators on Thursday attempted to storm the Khartoum headquarters of Sudan’s security and intelligence service, according to witnesses.

Army troops, however, managed to repel the protesters without any shots fired, witnesses said.

Similar incidents have been reported from the city of Port Sudan.

In the early afternoon, Sudanese Defense Minister Awad ibn Auf confirmed the “removal” of President Omar al-Bashir and the imposition of a two-year transitional phase.

In the eastern town of Kassala, meanwhile, security forces dispersed a major demonstration, according to local sources.
