KHARTOUM, Sudan/ISTANBUL (AA) - Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem Ahmed is visiting the US to discuss relations and continue talks on supporting peace in Sudan, the ministry said Friday.
“This visit comes within the framework of ongoing efforts to develop relations between Khartoum and Washington,” a statement said on US social media company X.
It also aims “to continue dialogue on issues of mutual interest, including support for peace in Sudan, the enhancement of economic and humanitarian cooperation, and discussing opportunities to rebuild relations based on mutual respect and common interests,” it added.
The statement did not provide details about the visit or agenda. But the United States leads the Quartet committee, along with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, formed in September 2024 to achieve a political settlement in Sudan.
The Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, said Saturday that the army is ready for talks to “end the war and restore Sudan’s unity and dignity.”
The Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been fighting since April 2023, which has killed more than 20,000 people and displaced 14 million, according to the UN and local authorities.
Research from US universities, however, estimates the death toll at around 130,000.
In July, the Sudanese Founding Alliance, a coalition led by the RSF, announced the formation of a parallel government led by RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
