Arrest campaign targets opposition, including leading members of Sudanese Professionals Association

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) - Sudan's opposition said Friday that the government has begun targeting its leaders for arrest ahead of nationwide protests scheduled for June 30.

"A number of leading members of the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) have been arrested, including Ahmed al-Rabia, a member of the SPA secretariat," Wahib Mohamed Saeed, a leading activist with the Alliance for Freedom and Change, said at a press conference in Khartoum.

Saeed confirmed that preparations are in place for the protests, which are calling for civilian rule and an investigation into the June 3 killing of protesters outside the military’s headquarters.

In early April, Sudan’s military establishment deposed long-serving President Omar al-Bashir following months of popular demonstrations against his 30-year rule.
