ISTANBUL (AA) – Sweden has announced new financial support of 22.5 million Swedish krona ($2.23 million) for a UN program to promote women’s empowerment in Ukraine, the Swedish Embassy in Kyiv said Saturday.

The announcement coincided with International Women’s Day, as the embassy honored Ukrainian women who “bravely defend their country and all of Europe as military personnel, humanitarian workers, entrepreneurs, and political leaders.”

“Sweden is launching new support for UN Women Ukraine, amounting to 22.5 million SEK (krona), to advance women’s rights and opportunities in Ukraine,” the embassy said in a statement on X.

The funding aims to enhance gender equality efforts in Ukraine amid the ongoing war, which has disproportionately affected women and vulnerable groups since it began over three years ago.

Sweden has been a longstanding partner in Ukraine’s humanitarian and development initiatives, focusing on democratic governance, women’s rights, and economic resilience.
