Syria confirms 1,426 civilians, soldiers killed in coastal unrest in March

Investigation committee says roughly 200,000 non-government armed elements launched an offensive on Syria’s coast at the time

ISTANBUL (AA) - A Syrian investigative committee announced Tuesday that 1,426 civilians and military personnel were killed and 20 others went missing during violent clashes in the coastal region in March 2025.

The figures were presented at a press conference in Damascus by the committee head, Jumaa Al-Anzi, and spokesperson Yasser Al-Farhan.

The committee stated that roughly 200,000 armed fighters launched an offensive on Syria’s coast at the time, “aiming to reclaim it from remnants of the former regime.” The large-scale assault triggered what the panel described as “violations.”

“Some of the armed elements were not affiliated with the government, which led to incidents of killing, looting, and sectarian slurs,” the committee noted.
