ISTANBUL (AA) – The foreign minister of new Syrian administration Asaad Al-Shaibani on Tuesday received a phone call from his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty, during which they discussed bilateral relations and the strong historical bond between Damascus and Cairo.

"I was pleased to receive a call from His Excellency, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, who stressed the importance of both nations' roles in achieving stability and prosperity in the region," Al-Shaibani said in a statement regarding X.

He added that Abdelatty emphasized the two countries' shared history and expressed optimism for a bright future, without providing any additional information.

The call comes amid a historic shift in Syria, where opposition forces seized control of Damascus and other cities on Dec. 8, prompting the withdrawal of government forces and marking the end of 61 years of Baath Party rule, including 53 years under the Assad family.

Since then, Damascus has become a hub for daily visits by regional and international officials engaging with Syria's new administration to navigate the nation's transitional phase and establish relations with its current leadership. Syrian officials have also been receiving numerous calls from foreign dignitaries as part of these efforts.

Earlier on Saturday, Al-Shaibani expressed his country's aspirations for significant and strategic relations with Egypt in a post on X, emphasizing the principles of sovereignty and non-interference.

He had earlier stated that “the coming days will witness extensive cooperation between Syria and its Arab neighbors across all sectors.”
