US sanctions relief move in 'right direction to relieve humanitarian, economic suffering in Syria,' Foreign Ministry says

The Syrian Foreign Ministry on Saturday welcomed a US decision to immediately remove sanctions on Syria, considering it a move in "the right direction to relieve the humanitarian and economic suffering in the country."

The Foreign Ministry's statement affirmed that it extends its hand for cooperation to all countries "on the basis of mutual respect and non-interference in the internal affairs" of Syria.

It also stressed that the "coming period will be a period for rebuilding what was destroyed by the deposed regime, and to restore Syria's normal position in the region and the world."

On Friday, the US Treasury Department issued a general license providing immediate sanctions relief for Syria.

"As President Trump promised, the Treasury Department and the State Department are implementing authorizations to encourage new investment into Syria," Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said in a statement.

During a visit to the Middle East last week, President Donald Trump said he would order the removal of “brutal and crippling” US sanctions on Syria to give that country “a chance at greatness.”

The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control said in a statement that the general license authorizes transactions prohibited by the Syrian Sanctions Regulations, effectively lifting sanctions on Syria.

The general license will enable new investment and private sector activity, it said.
