ISTANBUL(AA) - Taiwan has pledged to continue building its coast guard, asserting that Chinese "gray zone" incidents continue to occur, media reports said Sunday.

The announcement was made by Premier Cho Jung-tai, who spoke Saturday at the Taipei Port, the Central News Agency reported.

In addition to expanding the coast guard fleet, Cho said the government will ramp up facilities for service members so that they can perform their duties with "greater resolve.”

"Although China’s Coast Guard force is larger, Taiwanese Coast Guard personnel are not intimidated by any threats and remain on the front line of defense," he added.

The Taiwanese Coast Guard conducted 805 patrol actions to expel Chinese coast guard intrusions in 2025, according to Ocean Affairs Council Minister Kuan Bi-ling.

The council, which manages the coast guard, has secured more than NT$29.5 billion ($935 million) for new radar systems and a fleet of 40 new patrol boats.

Taiwan’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities will be "greatly" improved by 2027, according to Deputy Director-General of the Coast Guard Hsieh Ching-chin.

The coast guard received its 11th Anping-class patrol vessel, Lanyu, on Friday, per Liberty Times.
