ISTANBUL (AA) - A Taiwanese cargo ship was diverted to eastern China after colliding with an unidentified object at sea earlier this month, a local broadcaster reported Thursday.
The vessel, operated by Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation — Taiwan’s largest shipping company — was rerouted to the Chinese port city of Wenzhou in Zhejiang province, Taipei-based TVBS World reported, citing an anonymous shipping industry manager.
The ship had been scheduled to arrive at Keelung Port, Taiwan’s northernmost international harbor, on June 8.
The company initially told clients awaiting their cargo that it was "checking" on the situation, offering no immediate explanation.
Clients were reportedly not informed of the incident until June 12, when Yang Ming announced the ship required repairs due to damage sustained in the collision.
According to the shipping manager, independent tracking data from maritime satellite systems showed the vessel made a sudden 90-degree course change toward Wenzhou after becoming disabled at sea.
