Tanzanians headed to the polls Wednesday to elect a president and members of parliament amid tensions, according to media reports.

Voting started at 7 am local time (0400GMT) and will end at 4 pm (1300GMT).

But turnout has been reportedly low, according to The Star newspaper in Kenya.

Tensions reportedly rose in several regions, and voters expressed frustration with the elections, criticizing a lack of decent competition.

Tanzania’s first female President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, is facing her first elections since assuming office in 2021 after the death of her predecessor, John Magufuli.
