ISTANBUL (AA) - Taiwanese tech giant Foxconn and Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors have announced plans to jointly develop and manufacture electric vehicles (EVs), with production expected to begin in Taiwan and a market debut set for the second half of 2026.

According to a joint statement released Wednesday, the collaboration will be carried out through Foxtron -- Foxconn’s EV venture with Taiwanese automaker Yulon Motor -- marking Foxconn’s most significant move yet into the fast-growing and fiercely competitive EV industry.

Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU), Foxtron will be responsible for both design and manufacturing management. The new model, tailored for the Oceania region, will target the Australian and New Zealand markets.

"It features excellent driving performance as an EV and an advanced infotainment system, making it optimal for the Oceania region," the statement said, noting that both parties are working toward a definitive agreement.

Foxconn, the world’s largest electronics contract manufacturer and a key supplier for companies like Apple, has been diversifying into electric vehicles as part of a broader push to expand beyond consumer electronics.

The partnership comes as Mitsubishi and other traditional automakers face mounting competition from Chinese EV manufacturers like BYD, particularly in Southeast Asia, South America, and Europe.
