WASHINGTON (AA) - US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer signaled no immediate endorsement Tuesday of New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, saying more talks were planned.
"I'll just say I had a good talk with Mamdani last week, and I look forward to meeting with him in New York," Schumer told reporters along with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
"Same," Jeffries said.
The two Democrats have not yet endorsed Mamdani due to his criticisms of Israel.
President Donald Trump has publicly called Mamdani a "communist" and recently stressed that Mamdani said "some really bad things about Jewish people."
Mamdani has quickly become a rising star among progressive Democrats after he won New York City's mayoral Democratic primary in June, putting him on track to become the first Muslim and first South Asian to lead the US's largest city.
