WASHINGTON (AA) - US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine met Tuesday with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar of Trinidad and Tobago, reaffirming Washington’s security partnership with the Caribbean nation as tensions with nearby Venezuela continue to climb.

Caine and Persad-Bissessar exchanged views on challenges affecting the Caribbean region, including the destabilizing effects of illicit narcotics, arms, and human trafficking, and transnational criminal organization activities, joint staff spokesman Joseph Holstead said in a statement.

According to the statement, Caine emphasized that close cooperation between the US and Trinidad and Tobago "directly" contributes to preserving regional security.

He reaffirmed that the US "remains committed to working closely with Trinidad and Tobago to address shared threats and deepen collaboration across the Caribbean."
