Turkey debt stock stands at $213.2 billion

Treasury says government debt stock stood at 751.8 billion Turkish liras at end of November

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's government debt stock stood at 751.8 billion Turkish liras ($213.2 billion) at the end of November, the Turkish Treasury announced Tuesday.

The government debt - the total borrowed from private banks, insurance companies, investors in the country and abroad as well as from international lenders, increased by 75.6 billion liras in terms of local currency compared with 676.2 billion liras in Nov. 30 of last year.

However, the government debt declined in dollar terms to $213 billion from $232 billion in the same month of 2015 due to the historic depreciation of the Turkish Lira against the U.S. dollar in the year.

Most of the debt - 468.2 billion liras ($132.8 billion) - was in Turkish currency while 283.6 billion liras ($80.4 billion) was in foreign currency.

The government debt stood at 725.4 billion Turkish liras ($225 billion) at the end of October.

The lira dropped more than 20 percent against the U.S. dollar since the beginning of the year.
