Turkey: Main opposition candidate elected Ardahan mayor

Faruk Demir receives 5,389 votes

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey’s main opposition mayoral candidate has been elected mayor of the northeastern province of Ardahan in the local elections, according to unofficial results on Sunday.

Republican People’s Party (CHP) candidate Faruk Demir bagged 5,389 votes, while ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party candidate Yunus Bayar got 4,553 votes, according to the unofficial results.

Earlier on Sunday, millions of Turkish voters cast their votes in the local elections to choose Turkey’s mayors, city council members, mukhtars (neighborhood officials), and members of elder councils for the next five years.
