ANKARA (AA) - U.S. President Donald Trump received a “necessary lesson” in the UN vote against his recognition of Jerusalem, opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu said Friday.

“This vote is not only a very important vote for the Middle East but also for the whole world,” the Republican People’s Party (CHP) head said in Ankara.

Thursday night’s General Assembly vote saw 128 countries approve the nonbinding resolution, sponsored by Turkey and Yemen, with nine voting against.

Apart from the U.S. and Israel, seven nations opposed the motion although 35 of the 193 UN member states abstained and 21 were absent from the vote.

On Monday, the U.S. vetoed a Security Council resolution backed by the 14 other council members calling on Trump to reverse his Jerusalem declaration.
