KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) – Turkish Ambassador to Sudan Irfan Neziroglu has visited the family of late Sudanese Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi, who died from the coronavirus last month.

In a tweet, the Turkish diplomat said on Tuesday he offered condolences of the Turkish people over al-Mahdi’s death during a meeting with the son and daughter of the veteran Sudanese politician.

Al-Mahdi was the last democratically elected prime minister in Sudan, whose government was overthrown in 1989 by a military coup led by former President Omar Al-Bashir, who was ousted in April 2019 under pressure of mass protests.

Al-Mahdi, the leader of the National Umma Party, was a well-known Sudanese political figure, who has played an important role in public affairs. He has authored several books addressing the situation in Sudan, political Islam and Sharia law in Islam.
