Turkish opposition MHP candidate elected Bartin mayor

Cemal Akin bags nearly 36 percent of votes in local elections

ANKARA (AA) - The opposition Nationalist Movement Party's (MHP) candidate has been elected mayor of the northern province of Bartin in Turkey's local elections on Sunday.

Cemal Akin bagged 14,056 votes, while the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party got 13,731 votes, according to the unofficial results.

Earlier on Sunday, millions of Turkish voters cast their votes in the local elections to choose Turkey’s mayors, city council members, mukhtars (neighborhood officials), and members of elder councils for the next five years.
