ADEN (AA) - The Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay) is distributing a ton of flour for needy people in Aden, one of the largest cities in war-torn Yemen.

Some 40,000 families will benefit from the aid in the coastal city’s Hur Mekser district and elsewhere, Sadik Aydin, Kizilay's aid coordinator, told Anadolu Agency in Aden.

“This aid is a part of 10,000 tons of aid which reached the port of Aden” from Turkey, he added.

Yemen is the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, as nearly 70 percent of the population is in need of aid, according to the UN.

In September, Kate Gilmore, UN deputy high commissioner for human rights, said that 7.3 million people were on the brink of famine.

Yemen fell into civil war in 2014 when the Houthis and their allies overran large swathes of the country, including the capital Sanaa, forcing the government to set up an interim capital in the coastal city of Aden.

In 2015, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched a devastating air campaign aimed at rolling back Houthi military gains in Yemen.

According to UN figures, more than 10,000 people -- including numerous civilians -- have been killed to date as a result of the conflict.

Turkey has conducted aid and infrastructure projects in the conflict-torn country for more than two years through cooperation between the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), Red Crescent, Religious Affairs Directorate, and Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH).
