Turkish stock exchange down at Wednesday's close

Benchmark BIST 100 index loses 136.17 points at closing session

ISTANBUL (AA) - The Turkish benchmark stock index closed Wednesday at 9,523.31 points, down 1.41%, or 136.17 points from the previous close.

The BIST 100 index started the day at 9,606.37, losing 53.11 points from last week's close, after a break from the Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The lowest point for the index was 9,517.72, while the daily high was 9,643.17.

During the day, 62 indexes lost in value while 36 closed with gains.

The daily transaction volume reached 92.5 billion Turkish liras ($2.43 billion), while the overall value of the index was 8.69 trillion liras ($230.2 billion).

The USD/TRY exchange rate was 37.9220 as of 6.30 p.m. local time (1530GMT), the euro/lira exchange rate stood at 41.2095, and the British pound traded at 49.1720.

The price of an ounce of gold was $3,124.50, while the barrel price of Brent oil was $74.35.
