Türkiye's BIST 100 closes Thursday with strong gains

Benchmark index surges 185.58 points at daily close after Central Bank's unexpected rate hike

Türkiye's benchmark stock index closed Thursday at 9,140.70 points, surging 2.07% from the previous close.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 gained 185.58 points from Wednesday's close of 8,955.12 after the country's Central Bank surprisingly raised interest rates by 500 basis points to 50% on Thursday.

The total market value of BIST 100 was around 7.8 trillion liras ($240.6 billion) by market close, with a daily trading volume of 140 billion liras ($4.31 billion).

The price of an ounce of gold was $2,174.75 while Brent crude oil sold for around $85.39 per barrel as of 6.49 p.m. local time (1549GMT).

The US dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate was at 31.8723, the euro/lira exchange rate was at 34.7473, and the British pound traded at 40.4162 liras.
