LONDON, UK (AA) - A British citizen has been killed in Ukraine and another has been confirmed missing, the Foreign Office said on Thursday.

The pair had travelled to the eastern European country and took up arms against the Kremlin’s forces shortly after Russia launched its war on Ukraine on Feb. 24.

"We can confirm that a British national has been killed in Ukraine and are supporting their family,” a spokesperson from the Foreign Office said.

"We are aware of a British national who is missing in Ukraine and are supporting their family. We are urgently seeking further information,” the spokesperson added.

It is as of yet unknown when the UK national was killed and when his colleague went missing and the British government is searching for more information.

Answering pleas of support from Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy, a number of foreign nationals have travelled to Ukraine to fight in the war.

The British government, however, have advised its nationals against going to Ukraine to fight in the war despite previous comments from Foreign Secretary Liz Truss that the government supports such moves.
