Ukrainian forces recapture village of Udachne from Russian troops, claims General Staff

ISTANBUL (AA) - Ukraine on Tuesday claimed that it retook control of another settlement in the country’s eastern Donetsk region amid ongoing clashes with Russian troops.

Ukraine’s General Staff claimed in a video statement that it retook control of the village of Udachne, located about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) west of the city of Pokrovsk, a key front in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Moscow has repeatedly asserted territorial gains in recent months, particularly in Donetsk, where fighting has intensified around Pokrovsk, which serves as a critical logistics hub for Ukraine’s military operations in the region.

Earlier in the day, Denis Pushilin, the Russian-installed head of the Donetsk region, claimed on state TV channel Rossiya-24 that clashes are ongoing in the village, which he also affirmed in a video statement on Telegram late last month.

In January, Russian authorities claimed its forces entered the western part of the village.

Ukraine has claimed retaking control of various settlements in Donetsk in the past weeks, including most recently the village of Novoekonomichne on Monday.

Separately, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that its forces captured the village of Fedorivka, located about 34 kilometers (21 miles) east of the city of Kramatorsk, the provisional seat of the eastern Ukrainian region since Moscow seized control of Donetsk city in 2014.

The village is also situated about 19 kilometers (12 miles) north of the city of Bakhmut, which Russia reported capturing in May 2023 after months of intense clashes.

Russian authorities have not immediately commented on Ukraine’s recent claim, and independent verification of the claim is difficult due to the ongoing war.
