ISTANBUL (AA) - Ukraine said Friday that at least 29 people were injured by a Russian drone attack on the country’s southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia.
“As of 7 a.m. (0400GMT) on May 2, the number of injured people has increased to 29 citizens,” said a statement by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, adding that search and rescue operations in the city have been completed.
Zaporizhzhia Governor Ivan Fedorov said that 27 high-rise buildings, more than 10 private houses, non-residential buildings, and educational institutions were damaged in the attack, which took place late Thursday.
In a statement on Telegram, Fedorov said that 12 out of those injured are currently hospitalized.
“The premises of the locomotive repair plant of Ukrzaliznytsia – a civilian enterprise specializing in the repair of passenger electric locomotives – were also destroyed,” the statement added.
The state-owned railway company also confirmed the damage to its plant in the city, adding that nobody was killed or injured.
Fedorov went on to say that it will take several days to assess the condition of all the damaged buildings in the city, but that utility workers have begun work to address the damage.
Separately, Ukraine’s Air Force claimed that its air defenses shot down 64 out of 150 drones launched by Russia on the country overnight.
Russian authorities have not yet commented on the attack or the claims.
Zaporizhzhia is 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the front line between Moscow and Kyiv and has been frequently hit by airstrikes during the Russia-Ukraine war, now in its fourth year.
