ANKARA (AA) - The Ukrainian president on Friday spoke over the phone with the German chancellor to discuss the latest situation in the Russia war as well as the Istanbul grain deal.

In a Twitter post, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he thanked Olaf Scholz for a “great contribution” to the defense of Ukraine.

Zelenskyy said that he also informed the German chancellor about the Russian attacks on civilians and reiterate his support for the continuation of the grain deal that allows the export of Ukrainian grain via the Black Sea.

Türkiye, the UN, Russia, and Ukraine signed an agreement July 22 in Istanbul to resume grain exports from three Ukrainian Black Sea ports, which were paused after the Russia-Ukraine war began in February.

More than 10 million tons of grain have been exported from Ukraine since Aug. 1, according to the UN.
