WASHINGTON (AA) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned an attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed dozens of people, his spokesman said Tuesday.

"He offers his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the victims," Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

His remarks came after at least 26 people were killed when unknown gunmen opened fire Tuesday on tourists in Kashmir.

"The Secretary-General stresses attacks against civilians are unacceptable under any circumstances," Dujarric said.

The shooting occurred in the Baisaran area of Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in southern Kashmir that can only be accessed on foot but is typically crowded during the tourist season. Authorities described the assault as one of the worst in recent memory.

Most of the victims were Indian nationals from various states, though officials have yet to disclose the demographics of the victims.
