HATAY, Turkiye (AA) – The UN on Wednesday dispatched 70 truckloads of humanitarian aid to northwestern Syria, an opposition-held area in dire need of assistance due to years of conflict and the onset of winter.

The trucks crossed over into the Idlib province through the Cilvegozu border gate of Turkiye's southern Hatay province.

The humanitarian aid materials will be distributed among the needy in the city center and rural areas of Idlib.

Syria has been ravaged by a civil war since early 2011, when the Bashar al-Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protesters.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and more than 10 million displaced, according to UN estimates.

Recent days have seen plunging temperatures and snowfall in much of Turkiye and neighboring areas of Syria.
