Ghassan Salame is expected to discuss reformulation of 2015 Skhirat agreement with Libyan officials

TRIPOLI, Libya (AA) - UN envoy Ghassan Salame arrived in Libyan capital Tripoli on Tuesday for an unannounced visit during which he is expected to meet with members of Libya’s UN-backed unity government.

On the same day, the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), which Salame has headed since June, tweeted that the envoy had arrived in Tripoli for a “broad range of meetings” with Libyan officials.

During his visit, Salame is expected to discuss means of reformulating a 2015 political agreement between Libya’s main political camps.

Signed two years ago in the Moroccan city of Skhirat, the agreement gave rise to Libya’s current UN-backed unity government.

One year after its signing, however, Libya’s Tobruk-based government distanced itself from the agreement, demanding that the deal be reformulated.

Late last month, talks kicked off in Tunisia between the North African country’s main political camps with a view to amending the terms of the 2015 agreement.
