World Food Programme condemns attack, says violence against humanitarian workers must stop

JUBA, South Sudan (AA) - One person is feared dead and three others suffered gunshot injuries in an attack on a UN humanitarian aid convoy in South Sudan, the UN food agency said on Wednesday.

“On Monday, 5 October, a WFP boat-convoy carrying food assistance from Bor to Melut and Malakal was attacked around Shambe North of Lakes State. The river convoy consisted of three cargo vessels and a speedboat. The three cargo vessels had food assistance and 13 crew aboard. One person is missing and presumed killed, while three suffered gunshot injuries,” the World Food Programme (WFP) said in a statement.

The UN agency condemned the attack on humanitarian workers and contractors, who risk their lives for delivering much-needed food assistance to the most vulnerable people.

“Our thoughts are with the families of the missing crew member, and we wish a speedy recovery to those who suffered injuries” said WFP Country Director Matthew Hollingworth.

“Their dedication will not be forgotten. We call on the South Sudanese authorities to hold those responsible for this unspeakable violence accountable for their actions.”

“The violence against humanitarian workers must stop. I strongly condemn this attack on a humanitarian convoy that was transporting food to flood-affected people. Perpetrators must be brought to justice” said Alain Noudehou, humanitarian coordinator in South Sudan.

Some 800,000 people have been affected by flooding in South Sudan since July. A total of 37 counties out of 78 are affected with many areas still underwater and people are unable to tend to their lands and livestock.

The impact of the gunfire resulted in one cargo vessel being sunk with its cargo of much-needed humanitarian supplies.
