HAMILTON, Canada (AA) - The UN Security Council on Friday renewed sanctions against Sudan for an additional year.

They included targeted sanctions as well as an arms embargo until Sept. 12, 2026.

The resolution, circulated by the US, was unanimously passed by the 15-member Council.

UN Resolution 1591 was initially adopted by the council on March 29, 2005, to impose sanctions on Sudan by specifically targeting individuals and entities involved in the conflict in Darfur.

It includes travel bans, asset freezes and an arms embargo. A sanctions committee as well as a panel of experts who gather information on compliance would report to the Council.

US acting representative at the UN, John Kelley, thanked council members for "their constructive engagement to renew the Sudan sanctions measures and extend the panel of experts mandate."

Highlighting the dire situation in Darfur, Kelley also noted the "severe humanitarian challenges and mass displacement."

"This adoption sends the clear message that the international community remains focused on stemming the flow of arms and promoting accountability for those who perpetrate violence and instability in Darfur," he said, reaffirming US solidarity with the Sudanese people.
