HAMILTON, Canada (AA) - The UN Security Council expressed strong support Tuesday for the UN's top envoy for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, and urged all Libyan stakeholders to engage with her political roadmap aimed at advancing peace and reconciliation in the country.

"The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support for the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, including her mediation and good offices role to further an inclusive political process in Libya, and her roadmap announced on 21 August 2025," the Council said in a statement.

The Council members stressed the importance of Libyan political actors showing the "necessary political will and compromise" to support a Libyan-led process.

"They therefore urged all Libyan stakeholders to engage fully, seriously and without delay with the SRSG’s political roadmap," the statement added.

Highlighting the importance of unifying the country's institutions, including military and security forces, the statement said: "They noted the importance of progress towards the unification of all institutions, including military and security institutions, and underscored the importance of safeguarding the unity and independence of the judicial system."

"They reaffirmed their strong commitment to the central role of the United Nations in facilitating an inclusive Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process," it said.

Libya remains split between two rival administrations: the internationally recognized Government of National Unity (GNU) in Tripoli, led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, and an eastern-based government appointed by the House of Representatives and headed by Osama Hammad in Benghazi.

For years, UN efforts have aimed to bridge this divide and pave the way for long-delayed elections intended to reunify the country’s fractured institutions.
