ISTANBUL/ KYIV, Ukraine (AA) - Six Ukrainians were killed and 36 injured in Russian missile attacks on Tuesday, the Ukrainian National Police Chief said Wednesday.
The Russian army targeted 16 important infrastructure sites with 70 cruise missiles and five unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that took aim at buildings, power plants and electricity distribution centers, Ihor Klymenko said in a statement.
A total of 51 cruise missiles and five Lancet-type UAVs were downed by Ukrainian air defense systems, the statement noted, adding that Russia also targeted similar places in Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Lviv, Zaporizhia and other regions.
Authorities took to Telegram to urge residents to move to bomb shelters.
Kyiv Governor Vitali Klitschko said a residential building was hit by the strikes, without providing details on casualties.
“A few more explosions in different areas of the capital. Rescue services and medics are on the scene,” Klitschko said on Telegram.
He added that there is no electricity in some districts in Kyiv, with reports of emergency shutdowns.
Meanwhile, officials in the Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions have also reported sounds of explosions.
Officials reported that air defense systems in their respective regions are working.
No warnings were reported in the Crimea region, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014.
Air raid alerts are sounded almost on a daily basis due to possible missile and drone strikes, which have targeted the country's civilian and energy infrastructure.
The alert comes as seven people were killed by Russian strikes in the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv and Kherson regions in the last day, according to Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office.
