BERLIN (AA) - Two people were killed and several others were injured Wednesday in a knife attack at a park in southern Germany.

Police arrested a male suspect following the violent incident in Aschaffenburg, located in the southeastern state of Bavaria, and authorities confirmed there is no longer any risk to public safety.

“A 28-year-old Afghan national attacked a 2-year-old child with a knife. The child and a 41-year-old man suffered fatal injuries. Two other people were seriously injured,” the police have said in a statement.

German daily Bild reported, citing police sources, that the suspect attacked people with a knife in Schoental Park, targeting a group of small children among others. The 2-year-old victim was identified as a Moroccan national, according to the report.

Police had not yet revealed a motive for the attack, stating that investigations were still ongoing. The Aschaffenburg Criminal Investigation Department was seeking witnesses to provide any information related to the attack.

Last November, police designated parts of the park area as a “dangerous place.” According to local media reports, this designation stemmed from robbery and assault incidents connected to drug-related activity.
