ANKARA (AA) - At least two people were killed and tens of others injured when an earthquake jolted northern Iran early Friday, said officials.

The earthquake occurred at 00:48 a.m. local time (2018GMT Thursday) in the city of Damavand, east of the capital, at a depth of 7 kilometers (4.34 miles), according to the Tehran University Seismological Center.

A 60-year-old man in Rudehen district died when his head hit a wall while he was trying to escape, according to Tasnim news agency.

Mujtaba Khalidi, a spokesman for Iran's Emergency Directorate, said that a person, who had a heart attack during the earthquake, also lost his life.

Ismail Najjar, the head of the disaster management authority, said a total of 33 people were injured while rushing out of their homes in panic, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Ali Moradi, director of the Iranian Seismological Center, said that 38 aftershocks were recorded after the quake.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, where earthquakes occur often and are destructive.
