Turkey's BIST 100 index slips nearly 40 points from previous close

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index closed Tuesday down 39.74 points or 3.53% to stand at 1,087.16 points, after a four-and-a-half-day break for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index started the day up with a 1.20% hike to open at 1,140.39 points, compared to closing at 1,126.90 points on Thursday -- last week’s final trading day.

On Tuesday, the BIST 100 hovered between 1,064.91 and 1,143.26 points – six stocks on the index rose and 96 fell compared to the previous close.

Closing the day with a market value of some 799.5 billion Turkish liras ($115.3 billion), the benchmark index posted a daily trading volume of 23.1 billion Turkish liras ($3.3 billion).

Shares of defense electronics company Aselsan, real estate investment trust Emlak Konut GYO and private lender Garanti BBVA saw the highest trading volumes.

Stocks of Karel Elektronik, manufacturer and supplier of telecommunication equipments, did the best, rising 10%, while shares of Tat Gida, which operates in the food sector under Turkish business conglomerate Koc Holding, did the worst, losing 9.82%.

One ounce of gold sold for $1,983.00 by market close, up from $1,962.50 at the previous close, according to data from Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets.

The price of Brent crude oil was around $44.03 per barrel as of 6 p.m. (1500GMT) on Tuesday, with a day range of $43.24 to $44.11.

At the beginning of this year, a barrel of Brent oil sold for around $58.
