Cause of explosion in residential building in Blankenburg remains unclear

BERLIN (AA) - At least one person has died and 25 others injured in an explosion in the eastern German city of Blankenburg, officials said on Friday.

A police spokesperson told German news agency DPA that a person was found dead in the residential building where the blast occurred.

Earlier, Magdeburg police said on Twitter that at least 25 people were injured in the blast, with several of them in critical condition.

The explosion happened at about 8.55 a.m. local time (0755GMT) in one of the apartments of a five-story building on Bertolt Brecht Street.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear.
