HAKKARI, Turkey (AA) - A soldier was martyred Monday during an operation against PKK terrorists in Turkey’s southeastern Hakkari province, according to a security official.

The soldier was shot by the PKK while unloading a helicopter in Duztepe, a mountainous district close to the Iraq border, the official said on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media.

He later died at Hakkari State Hospital.

An alleged PKK terrorist was later killed and three others “neutralized” in separate incidents in Semdinli, a district around 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of Duztepe.

The Turkish military typically uses the term “neutralized” to refer to killed, wounded or captured terrorists.

More than 1,200 people, including security personnel and civilians, have been killed since the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU -- resumed its armed campaign in July 2015.
